Video Scripts Using AI

Generating AI Video Scripts and Structures

Scriptwriting has entered a new era. With AI as a creative partner, you can move from idea to polished script faster, while exploring new concepts, styles, and storytelling possibilities.

While ChatGPT is one of the most popular and versatile tools for generating ideas, developing narratives, and writing video scripts, it's far from the only option available. Tools such as Gemini, Squibler, Claude, and NotebookLM each offer unique features that can support different stages of the creative process.

From brainstorming concepts and crafting compelling introductions to outlining entire productions and refining dialogue, AI writing tools can significantly speed up script development while helping you stay organized and focused. Whether you're creating educational content, marketing videos, documentaries, short films, or social media content, these platforms can act as valuable creative assistants throughout the scripting process.

In this page (and see the video scripting section of the course starting here) we'll explore the leading AI writing tools and how they can help you develop stronger ideas, build better stories, and create engaging video scripts more efficiently.

Also, you'll see us talk about developing either scripts or structure, depending on your project:

Scripts vs Structures

Script

Structure

Structure

A script is a detailed scene-by-scene breakdown of your video, outlining exactly what happens and what is said.

Typically includes:

  • Scene descriptions
  • Dialogue or narration
  • Actions and events
  • Camera directions (optional)
  • Audio and sound cues (optional)

Best for: Films, commercials, narrative content, and projects requiring detailed planning.

Structure

Structure

Structure

A structure is a high-level outline of your video or story, focusing on the key sections and flow rather than detailed scenes.

Typically includes:

  • Main topics or story beats
  • Beginning, middle, and end
  • Key messages
  • Major scenes or chapters

Best for: Explainer videos, educational content, presentations, social media videos, and projects where a full script isn't necessary.

In many projects, a simple structure is all you need. For more complex productions, a structure often becomes the foundation for developing a full script.

Start by Understanding Script Structure

What is the 3 Act Strucuture?

The three-act structure divides a story into three parts: Setup, Confrontation, and Resolution, guiding the audience through an engaging narrative arc. It’s widely used because it provides a clear framework to introduce characters, build tension, and deliver a satisfying conclusion.

Act 1: Setup (Introduction)

Purpose: Grab attention and set the stage.
Key Elements:

  • Hook with a compelling statement or question.
  • Context: Brief overview of the page’s purpose.
  • Problem Statement: Define the reader’s issue or goal.

Act 2: Confrontation (Body Content)

Purpose: Address challenges and provide solutions.
Key Elements:

  • Highlight pain points and show understanding.
  • Present solutions and benefits.
  • Back it up with supporting info like testimonials.

Act 3: Resolution (Call to Action)

Purpose: Encourage the reader to take action.
Key Elements:

  • Summarize benefits briefly.
  • Provide a clear call to action.
  • Offer reassurance with a final supportive message.

This structure ensures a smooth, engaging experience for readers that guides them toward a meaningful next step.

How to Use ChatGPT to Generate Video Scripts and Structures

ChatGPT is a powerful tool for creating detailed video scripts and structures, allowing you to build narratives, outline scenes, and refine character development. It’s particularly effective for brainstorming and expanding ideas through interactive, back-and-forth prompts. Here’s a guide on using ChatGPT to generate engaging video scripts:

Ways to Use ChatGPT for Script Generation:

  1. Generating Script Ideas from Scratch
Use ChatGPT to brainstorm and create unique concepts based on broad topics.
    Example Prompt:
"I want to create a motivational video. Can you suggest three engaging script ideas with compelling openings?"
ChatGPT will generate multiple ideas, each with a unique narrative hook.
  2. Building Story Structures
Ask ChatGPT to create or refine a story structure using a specific format, like the three-act structure.
    Example Prompt:
"Can you outline a three-act structure for a short film about a character who overcomes self-doubt to achieve their dreams?"
ChatGPT will provide a detailed outline with key plot points for each act.
  3. Creating Dialogue and Scenes
If you need help with specific scenes or dialogue, ChatGPT can generate realistic conversations or scenarios.
    Example Prompt:
"Write a dialogue scene between two characters discussing their plans for a daring heist."
ChatGPT will create a scene with engaging dialogue, giving you a head start in crafting your narrative.
  4. Refining Characters and Backgrounds
Ask ChatGPT to help develop well-rounded characters with backstories and motivations.
    Example Prompt:
"Create a character profile for a young, ambitious journalist trying to uncover corporate corruption. Include their motivations and key challenges."
This allows ChatGPT to flesh out characters, adding depth to your story.
  5. Drafting Full Scripts or Small Scenes
For more comprehensive scripting, you can prompt ChatGPT to create a full script or a concise scene.
    Example Prompt:
"Write a full script for a 2-minute AI explainer video about the importance of cybersecurity."
    Or
"Draft a brief scene of a thriller where the protagonist narrowly escapes from a locked building."
ChatGPT can handle both complete narratives and short, impactful scenes.

Developing Niche Ideas:

If you have a niche topic or an initial idea, ChatGPT can help you develop it further:
Example Prompt:
"I want to create a video about eco-friendly travel tips for budget-conscious travelers. Can you provide an outline and a script for the introduction?"
ChatGPT will expand on your idea with a clear structure and engaging language.

Ideal Prompt Structure for ChatGPT:

  1. Start with a Clear Objective: Specify the purpose or genre of the video.
  2. Provide Context and Details: Mention any specific elements or themes you want to include.
  3. Request Specifics: Ask for key points, outlines, scripts, or dialogue.
  4. Tone and Style: Indicate the desired tone (e.g., casual, formal, humorous).

Example Ideal Prompt:
"I want to create a tutorial video on AI art tools. Can you provide an engaging script outline, including an introduction, three main points, and a conclusion? Keep the tone casual and informative."

Differences with Other Platforms:

  • ChatGPT vs. Gemini: Gemini excels at providing accurate data and context-heavy insights, making it great for educational or fact-based videos. ChatGPT, however, is more narrative-oriented, focusing on developing engaging plots and creative script structures.

Collaborative Script Development with ChatGPT:

ChatGPT’s conversational nature makes it easy to refine ideas and expand on scripts interactively. You can:

  • Develop Characters and Plot-lines: Ask follow-up questions about characters’ motivations or plot twists to refine the narrative.
  • Experiment with Dialogue: Go back and forth to tweak dialogue until it feels natural and impactful.
  • Iterate on Script Length: Request revisions to condense or expand specific sections based on your needs.

Example Conversation Flow:

  1. Prompt 1: "Create a scene where the main character confronts their mentor about a betrayal."
  2. ChatGPT Output: Provides the initial scene.
  3. Follow-up Prompt: "Can you add more tension to the dialogue in this scene?"
  4. ChatGPT Output: Revises the dialogue to increase the tension.
  5. Final Follow-up Prompt: "Now, rewrite the ending of this scene to leave the audience in suspense."

By using these interactive prompts, you can co-create full scripts, refine characters, and experiment with scenes until they align with your vision. Whether you’re working on complete stories or short AI videos, ChatGPT’s flexibility and narrative depth make it an ideal tool for every step of the scriptwriting process.
